Paihia Beach Resort & Spa Sponsors Cancer Survivor’s Journey

Rudy Posposil is cycling through New Zealand as part of a very special journey which is taking him around the world. Right now he’s making his way up from the South Island, aiming to arrive in the Bay of Islands the week before Christmas, where he will be hosted at the Paihia Beach Resort & Spa for a night of well-deserved luxury.

Rudy is a Fire Captain from Vancouver, Canada and a cancer survivor.

“I am what is termed a cancer survivor because I had cancer and was treated, have it still, but have not died from it yet,” says Rudy. “So I am surviving.”

In 2009, Rudy departed on a mission to fight cancer. “I have turned the tragedies I’ve experienced first-hand into fuel for my legs to cycle around the world,” he says.

The money he raises in each country is used to fight cancer in that country. In New Zealand, he has partnered with fellow firefighters to support Leukaemia and Lymphoma cancer research: www.leukaemia.org.nz

Rudy’s cycling tour started as a ride out the front door of his Vancouver, Canada, home and down the USA’s Pacific Coast Highway. It has now turned into a global feat which has generated substantial international media attention, sparked a documentary which has captured the interest of accredited producers and, most importantly, has raised more than $35,000 to fight cancer and inspired others to do similar fundraisers in their communities.

“In total, I have cycled almost 20,000 kilometres in 15 countries. I’ve fought extreme heat in the desert sands of the Continental Divide. I’ve had more close calls with swerving semi-trucks than I care to count.

“But by far, my biggest challenge has been the financial burden to complete this non-profit project on a firefighter’s salary,” says Rudy, who points out New Zealand is one of the most expensive countries in the world.

That’s where generous businesses like Paihia Beach Resort & Spa step in, offering heavily discounted prices on accommodation for Rudy and his film-makers.

“I admire the amazing journey Rudy is on,” says Lyndsey Morrison, Manager of Paihia Beach Resort & Spa. “We are happy to help Rudy’s cause and look forward to him and his team staying with us on 20 December.

Rudy will be staying in the Poolside Studio, which features a super king bed which can be split into two, an extra rollaway bed, kitchenette, private patio with direct pool access and a six-foot spa bath in the ensuite.
