Our Environmental Commitment

We at Paihia Beach Resort & Spa work hard to support this wonderful regions environment by undertaking a number of actions. Many of these you will not see, but some you may notice.

Our Staff

There is a special induction process for all new staff with regular updates as we improve our environmental systems so that all staff are aware of and are involved in our commitment to the environment. We encourage our staff to come up with new initiatives and also to share our commitment with our guests making them aware of how they can be involved. If you have any concerns or queries on our environmental policy please ask one of our staff.

Paihia Beach Resort & Spa is reducing our demand on energy by the following actions and initiatives.

  • We offer you key cards which switch off appliances when you are out.
  • We offer a towel and linen change agreement which ensures you’re helping the environment by reducing energy and water use.
  • We buy local produce where possible to reduce transport emissions.
  • We regularly upgrade appliances to energy-efficient models.
  • We have installed where possible low energy light bulbs in our premises
  • We use energy efficient timers on some lighting and equipment.
  • We use new technology where ever possible to save energy including an invisible environmentally friendly liquid pool cover to reduce heat loss from our heated pools.

Waste Examples

Paihia Beach Resort & Spa is reducing our waste through the following actions:

  • We run an extensive recycling program for all Hotel waste reducing the amount of waste going into landfills
  • We have reduced packaging to a minimum by not using single-packaged portions, using dispensers for high quality toiletries, buying quality products in bulk, replacing disposable items with reusable ones.
  • Offering you facilities to get the news online sooner than daily newspapers, unless by request.
  • Not printing unnecessary emails.
  • Buying only from producers who offer environmentally-friendly packaging options in returnable containers where possible.
  • We try to reduce waste by not purchasing products with excessive packaging.

Water Examples

Paihia Beach Resort & Spa is conserving water by:

  • Offering our guests Towel and Linen Agreements to avoid unnecessary laundering.
  • Ensuring we’ve installed devices in taps and shower heads to reduce water volume without compromising on quality.
  • Installation of toilets with low-flush options.
  • Using only water efficient washing machines and dishwashers.

Pollution Examples

Paihia Beach Resort & Spa is reducing pollution of waterways/noise/air/light by:

  • Mostly using biodegradable or non toxic cleaning products.
  • Installing refillable secure soap, body lotion, shampoo and conditioner dispensers throughout our Resort. This one action has on its own saved thousands of individual little plastic product bottles every year ending up in the environment or having to be recycled and also has at the same time eliminated massive product wastage.
  • Mostly using only natural/low or no-allergenic toiletry products.
  • Noise insulating our premises.
  • Sourcing our materials & products from local or Fair Trade producers where possible.
  • Using aerosol products that contain only natural products instead of chemical ones.
  • Using rechargeable batteries where possible.
  • The installation of surface drainage sediment and oil and grease interceptor traps to prevent any discharge of harmful or hazardous substances entering the sewage or storm water system and eventually entering the waterways.

Wise purchasing

Paihia Beach Resort & Spa participates in a wise product purchasing programme:

  • By ensuring we locally source as much product as we can which helps reduce the carbon emissions from transport.
  • By ensuring where possible we support those products that are organically produced or from a renewable resource.

Conservation Examples

Paihia Beach Resort & Spa is supporting wildlife conservation:

  • By being the major ongoing sponsor of an Island habitat restoration programme.
  • This island is the second largest island in the Cavalli group and one of the only rat, opossum, cat and mustilid free islands making it ideal for the restoration of native plant and bird species. This programme is long term and will with the help of the Department of Conservation result in the introduction of Kiwi and other native birds once the native plant food species have been established. Kiwi numbers on the mainland continue to be decimated with 95% of Kiwi chicks falling prey to mustilids or wild cats within the first few weeks of life. Uncontrolled dogs on the mainland also have a serious impact on adult Kiwi further pushing these iconic birds towards extinction. Many other native birds are under extreme pressure from predators and the loss of habitat which makes the restoration of this unique island where New Zealand native bird species can thrive in a predator free natural environment one that is of national significance.

Community Examples

Paihia Beach Resort & Spa understands we’re part of our local community and participate in it by:

  • Donating products to local charities/schools.
  • Ensuring that a percentage of our profit is contributed to a community conservation project “The Motukawaiti Island Restoration Programme”.
  • Paihia Beach Resort & Spa is involved in various sponsorships.
  • Buying locally produced quality art/craft along with the promotion of local artists.
  • Offering employment and career opportunities to local residents first where possible.
  • Co operating and interacting with our local community by taking on the “own a beach policy” and encouraging others to do the same where by our staff will pick up and recycle the rubbish off Te Tii beach in front and either side of the Hotel in order that visitors to the beach are enjoying pristine conditions and are not being offended by litter that is either left behind by others or has been washed up on the beach.

Our Ongoing Commitment

Our business has developed this environmental policy in line with improving our environmental performance across all areas of our business practice, and in the products, services and experience we offer. You can help us care for this unique part of New Zealand by supporting our towel and linen agreement. Many guests choose to reuse their towels and or have their sheets changed less often, this is an easy way you can help us to save water and use less detergents which can end up in our waterways.  Also if you wish to help us reduce waste, we have recycling facilities in your rooms as well as in the Hotel car park.

Our environmental sustainability will be an ongoing journey which will improve with time and experience. In order for us to continue improving our efficiencies we invite you to inform us of any initiatives that may help us improve our environmental performance and help us reach our goal of providing an ever improving environmentally and socially responsible product.

We hope you leave Paihia Beach Resort & Spa knowing your support and or actions have helped us to maintain and enhance this wonderful region known as the Bay of Islands.
